Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP)

What is the IATP?

The IATP is a not for profit organisation, in the process of obtaining charity status, whose sole concern is to provide a dynamic and interactive link between those seeking asbestos training and the companies that can provide it.

The IATP website only lists asbestos training providers that have submitted documentary evidence confirming their compliance with the regulations; including independent, external audits where necessary.  The details of these audits are included with each training provider’s listings, to allow clients to conduct their own checks, should they so wish.

The IATP is a partner organisation in the HSE’s Asbestos: Hidden Killer campaign and will be just as involved in the forthcoming campaign to raise awareness of the Duty to Manage asbestos in premises.

Why might I need Asbestos Training?

The asbestos regulations are very clear that all persons who are liable to disturb asbestos while carrying out their normal everyday work, or who may influence how this work is carried out, will need some form of asbestos training.

What types of Asbestos Training are there?

IATP training providers offer not only the first three types of asbestos training, as stipulated by the asbestos regulations, but also an additional range of courses, including e-learning; designed to meet the needs of every client.

The types of courses on offer are:

·         Type 1 – Asbestos Awareness Training

·         Type 2 – Training for Non-Licensable Asbestos Work

·         Type 3 – Training for Licensable Work with Asbestos

·         Type 4 – BOHS P400 series

Which Type of Training is right for me?

Type 1 – Asbestos Awareness Training

Asbestos awareness training is required to be given to employees whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos. In particular, it should be given to all demolition workers and those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of the building:

§         general maintenance staff

§         electricians

§         plumbers

§         gas fitters

§         painters and decorators

§         joiners

§         plasterers

§         demolition workers

§         construction workers

§         roofers

§         heating and ventilation engineers

§         telecommunications engineers

§         fire and burglar alarm installers

§         computer installers

§         architects, building surveyors and other such professionals

§         shop fitters

Type 2 – Training for Non-Licensable Asbestos Work

This is for those who undertake planned work with asbestos which is not licensable such as a roofer or demolition worker removing a whole asbestos cement sheet in good condition or analytical staff and asbestos surveyors.

Persons requiring this type of training would include those whose work will knowingly disturb ACMs, such as maintenance workers and their supervisors; and those who carry out asbestos sampling and analysis. It should be given in addition to asbestos awareness training.

Type 3 – Training for Licensable Work with Asbestos

This is for those working with asbestos which is licensable such as removing asbestos insulation or insulating board.

Type 4 – British Occupational Hygiene Society P400 series

BOHS Courses, including:

§         P401 – Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)

§         P402 – Building Surveys and Bulk Sampling for Asbestos

§         P404 – Air Sampling and Clearance Testing of Asbestos

§         P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings

§         P406 – Supervision & Management of the Safe Removal & Disposal of Asbestos

§         S301 – Asbestos and Other Fibres

Type 5 – Other asbestos and asbestos related training courses

Other asbestos training courses provided by a Training Provider that are do not fall into the previous types of training or asbestos related training courses such as:
